What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of health care that has evolved into a complete holistsic medical system. Practicioners of acupuncture and Chinese medicine have used this non invasive medical system to diagnose millions of people.
 
An acupuncturist will place fine, single use, sterile needles at specific acupoints on the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine this activates the body's Qi and promotes naturual healing by enhancing recuperative power, immunity, physical and emotional health.

Will the needle hurt?

Some people feel a little sensation as the needles are inserted, but some people feel no sensation at all. The needles are tiny, just a little larger than a cat's whisker or human hair.

What can I expect?

Where the acupuncture needle has been inserted, you may experience vague numbness, heaviness, tingling or dull ache. Some people experience a sensation of energy spreading and moving around the needle known as the "Qi sensation". After treatment, you may feel energised or may experience a deep sense of relaxation and wellbeing.

What will my Acupuncturist do?

You will be required to complete a detailed Client Information Sheet. Questions will be asked regarding symptoms, health and lifestyle. Your acupuncturist may also check your pulse, tongue and may conduct a physical exam. This information is then collaborated to create a complete and comprehensive diagnosis of where Qi has become blocked or imbalanced according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. After the interview process, you may receive an acupuncture treatment. A visit with your acupuncturist may last from 30 to 45 minutes.

Why look at my tongue?

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine the tongue is a map of the body. It reflects the general health of organs and meridians. Your acupuncturist wil look at the colour, shape, cracks and coating on your tongue.

Why feel my pulse?

Accepted Answer

There are 12 pulse positions on each of your wrists that your acupuncturist will palpitate. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine each position corresponds to a specific meridian and organ. Your acupuncturist will be looking for 27 individual qualities that reflect your overall health. If there are any problems, they may appear in the pulse.

How long before I feel better?

Depending on your current health and symptoms, you may feel changes immediately or you may require treatments for some time to achive the desired results. Your acupuncturist can give you an idea of what to expect based on your individual circumstances. Your acupuncturist may suggest one or two treatments per week, monthly visits for health maintainence or seasonal "tune ups".

Why recommend herbs?

Herbs can be a powerful companion to acupuncture therapy. Your acupuncturist may suggest starting with herbs and then adding acupuncture to your treatment. This is recommended to build up your internal strength so you can receive the full benefits acupuncture has to offer.

How should I prepare?

- Please attend your appointment on time
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing
- Don't eat large meals just before or after your visit
- Be sure to discuss any questions or concerns
- Avoid stressful situations. Make time to relax and get plenty of rest
- Between visits, take note of any changes that may have occurred, such as the alleviation of pain, pain moving to other areas or changes in the frequency or type of problems.

Can I claim treatments from my health insurance?

We do have a HICAPS machine in the clinic, however insurance coverage varies from fund to fund. Contact your insurance provider to learn what kind of treatment is covered. Some questions to ask are:
- Do I need a referral?
- Does my plan cover acupuncture?
- How many visits per year does my plan permit?
